Bird Box | Netflix
I’m sure we can all recall the Netfix original film which very quickly became a phenomenon at the end of last year, called Bird Box.
I know, I know, I’m writing about this extreeeemely late, but I was late to the party watching it as well as I didn’t believe the hype, but here I am, four months after the initial release, recommending it to you.
I will be the first to admit that I had my reservations about this film. I saw the memes across social media and, to be honest, I thought the hype was exaggerated. I rarely watch films on Netflix either, I’m more of a series type of gal. But since it was that weird period between Christmas and the New Year, I sat down with my family and we decided to check out Bird Box with the idea of turning it off if it was no good.
But oh my god, it completely drew us in. High tensions, thrown straight into the drama, and we mostly just sat there with expressions of “WTF?!?!” on our faces.
Bird Box has a very War of the World’s type of vibe about it, and that film reminds me of my childhood as I remember sitting down with my family to watch that too, so no wonder this film gave me feelings of nostalgia. I would also liken the film to that of I Am Legend, it’s one of those ‘never-going-to-happen-but-I-think-I-could-survive-it-if-it-did’ type of films.
I’ll try not to spoil too much if you haven’t watched it yet, but within the first few minutes of the film we discover that there’s some supernatural force that has come across the world that if people look at, it makes them commit suicide. So do expect lots of dramatic suicides throughout, including jumping from high windows, cars swerving into oncoming traffic and willingly getting into burning cars.
It’s a film with lots of love, action, heartache, and very, very high tensions where blindfolds and rope lines are involved.
*SPOILER* I was very pleased that there was a happy ending for the lead, Sandra Bullock, and the two children, as I was absolutely convinced it would be turned on its head and the happy ending would be destroyed, but it wasn’t which was a nice touch, it ended very tranquilly. It’s always nice to give hope to viewers at the end of such a high tension film.
It’s a film that makes you think, it reels you in and makes you care for it’s characters. It encourages you to create your own theories on how you would escape the supernatural force yourself, and I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed it.
