a trip to the seaside

This weekend, myself and my boyfriend, Tom, decided to take a little trip to our local uni based seaside town, Weston-super-Mare. When you move to a new city as a student, you often forget that there are further places to explore than just the city your university is based, which for us is the quaint city of Bath. Whilst we enjoy Bath and its historical quirks, we also enjoy exploring the outer perimeters of the south-west. We have visited Bristol and its vibrancy a multitude of times, visiting the Aquarium, the harbour, and even Ikea when we moved into our house at the start of second year. Although Bristol is great and right on our door step (we can get a bus there and back for roughly only a fiver!) we wanted to venture to a place we hadn't already been together and we thought neither of us had ever visited- but turns out Tom already had with his mum and dad when he was a toddler. Since the weather here has been beautifully sunny lately, we thought it was the perfect time to visit the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare which is also more or less on our doorstep.
I was super excited for our trip to the sea as I hadn't been to a sandy British beach for years- my local one back in Kent is Broadstairs, however my nan has a caravan at Seasalter which is near to Whitstable, a very pebbly, oyster-y beach that I visit regularly when I am home. Anyway, we got to the train station and bought our tickets (a bargain at £12.15 each there and back) and boarded the very busy train and we were on our way. The journey itself was probably around 45 minutes and when we arrived in the seaside town I instantly knew we were going to have a good day. The weather was perfect as it was cooler in W-s-M at about 22 degrees (C), so firstly we stopped off at a big Tesco which is right by the seafront to pick up a few picnic provisions and made our way to the beach.
The beach at W-s-M was beaut, there was a lively and very crowded pier decorated with blue, red, and white bunting which provided me with a pretty Instagram pic, as well as a Ferris wheel on the beach front. We thought we had picked any random Saturday to travel to this beach town and that it was just extraordinarily busy because of the heat wave we're experiencing... but then we heard the loud roar of an aircraft engine. We had stumbled upon the Weston Air Festival and Armed Forces Weekend. I know we would have had a good day regardless, but the Air Festival made it just that little bit more special and provided us with some entertainment whilst relaxing on the beach next to the donkeys.
We sat on the beach for an hour or two watching the aircraft display before getting up to explore further along the seafront. We saw some of the rides and coasters, as well as the air festivals stalls before making our way back to Tesco for a quick wee pit stop. We mooched about in the town for a little while looking at the pretty architecture of the buildings- one particular hotel and the town hall are incredible. After a few hours we made our way back to the train station, finished off the leftovers from our picnic, and began our travels home.
Making the effort to travel to somewhere a little bit further out than where you're situated is SO worth it for the escapism. Whilst the nerves and hassle of travel often makes us not bother going places, our trip to Weston-super-Mare was successful and we had the best summers day at the beach, and survived with very minimal sunburn! When we were there we were already talking about what else we can explore in this pretty seaside town the next time we visit, which we hope we can fit in before our uni days are over (we graduate our three year courses next summer).
This trip has made me excited for all the other places hidden away in Britain that we can visit over the course of our summer, I can only hope that the weather will continue to be as kind to us as it was this weekend. Thank you Weston-super-Mare for lifting our spirits and for kick starting our summer adventures!
